Economic development cooperation

Economic development cooperation between the Republic of Botswana and the Federal Republic of Germany lasted for more than 30 years.

However, since 2001, Botswana is considered a “middle income country” and due to this status change official German development aid to Botswana was phased out in 1992 (Financial cooperation) and 2007 (Technical cooperation) respectively.

Nevertheless, Germany continues to support Botswana through the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) (before DED)

The continued support from DED is based on a special agreement in which the Botswana Government commits itself to co-fund the work of DED and their development workers in the country.
